Network or Netwaste?

It is no secret that we all need to build strong network support systems to build a successful business. I have noticed an interesting trend among the newer start-ups that I advise. They often confuse their network with how many people they have in their social media circles. Don’t get me wrong social networks can be a powerful tool but every business owner should evaluate the quality of their network. Here are a few considerations when reviewing your network:

  • Do you have separate personal and professional accounts? Why? It helps you to tailor your message to your audience. You do not want them to be confused about your purpose or intent. When you separate, your accounts drive your personal followers to your business page. If they follow you have a network… if they just click like but don’t follow you have netwaste.

  • Promote your events (free or paid) to your followers. Do they actually show up? If the answer is consistently no then you (my friend) have netwaste!

  • Does your network refer business to you or make suggestions to you on services that will enhance your product offering? Then you have a network.
Your network should be your greatest asset. If you need to raise money or to hire a new employee your network should be there to help. Even if they don’t have a specific person in mind they can act as a megaphone for you and your business.

Before making anyone a part of your business network VET them… use their services, spend some time with them, have long conversations be sure to get a good handle on who they are. If you have properly (and personally) vetted them you can weed out the waste. Remember networks work in both directions so don’t be afraid to get rid of waste and make sure you aren’t apart of someone else’s netwaste.

Reluctantly Yours,

Every now and then as entrepreneurs and business owners we can become discouraged. This is a part of the process however we cannot get stuck in this pit. Here's a technique I use when I find myself frustrated. I stop and I chart my progress. I look backwards and see how far I have come.

When I look at where some of my projects started it makes me chuckle. The best part of it is that I GOT IT DONE!

If you need a boost... then just look at where you have come from!

Reluctantly Yours,

S.
